About Em Howes: A New Hampshire Web Designer

snapshot2I am a web designer from Newbury, New Hampshire. Writing, designing, and helping others understand the Internet are some of my passions. I work frequently with XHTML, CSS, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, and PHP on a Macintosh. It is my platform of choice.

I have been designing websites since 2002, aiming for clean, search engine friendly designs that are eye-catching, functional, and easy to use. Each website is unique and is treated as if it were my own. I also encourage input from my clients and am aware that most people need some guidance. I strive to be patient, helpful, and understanding throughout the process.

My philosophy is that a website should look uncomplicated and be enticing. The colors should complement each other while the graphics blend subtly into the theme.

I design websites that are CSS-based and search engine friendly. I validate my web pages (checking them against a formal standard). Validating a web page is similar to spell checking and proofreading, but more precise. The process of validation ensures that my websites will work with future technologies. Websites designed to standards are also more likely to be accessible to all types of browsers, platforms, and screen readers.

Content is the most important part of a website in my opinion. So I concentrate closely on helping my clients polish their content. I am also passionate about teaching and discussing the World Wide Web with anyone who will listen.

So it seems natural that I should start a blog. It is a time-consuming, yet rewarding process. Blogging forces me to think topics through a lot more thoroughly. It also pushes me to keep up with the latest events on the Internet. I must research and study each topic before I begin to write. Then I try to make the subject easy to understand and entertaining.

I love to teach others.

Way back when, I planned to become a teacher, but my eighth grade teacher talked me out of it. I went to college and became a registered nurse instead. Then, somehow I stepped into the world of web design. I believe I have some creative, technical, and writing skills. I like to use these to teach others along the way. It seems that I have become a teacher after all.
