In Part 1 of this blog post<\/a>, <\/strong>we discussed registrars and domain name availability. You’ve jotted down 8 or more great ideas for your domain name. Here are a few more tips to consider and pitfalls to avoid before you narrow down your choices to a select few.<\/p>\n

Ask Yourself 4 Questions:<\/strong>
\n<\/p>\n

(1) Is your Domain Name Short?<\/h3>\n

If your domain name is long, people are more likely to forget it or to make a mistake when typing it. If your company name is long, it makes more sense to use an abbreviated version of it as a domain name. Look at the examples below. You will see why they used shortened versions of their organization names.<\/p>\n

Examples of Shortened Domain Names:<\/strong><\/p>\n

(1) Capitol Center for the Arts<\/strong><\/a> (the largest performing arts center in New Hampshire)<\/p>\n

DOMAIN NAME: ccanh.com<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(instead of capitolcenterforthearts.com<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

(2) Canterbury Shaker Village<\/strong><\/a> (non-profit museum dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Canterbury Shakers)<\/p>\n

DOMAIN NAME: shakers.org<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(instead of canterburyshakervillage.org<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

(3) New Hampshire Audubon<\/strong><\/a> (non-profit organization in Concord, NH dedicated to the conservation of New Hampshire wildlife and habitat)<\/p>\n

DOMAIN NAME: nhaudubon.org <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(instead of newhampshireaudubon.org<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

(2) Is your Domain Name Easy to Spell?<\/h3>\n

Tell friends or family members your potential domain name and ask them to spell it. If they struggle, you need to change it.\u00a0You don\u2019t want potential visitors to mistype your domain name and end up on a different website.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an example of a complicated, though famous, organization\u2019s name:<\/p>\n

McAuliffe-Shepard<\/a> Discovery Center <\/strong>is\u00a0<\/strong>a place where you can learn about astronomy, aviation and the Earth.<\/p>\n

DOMAIN NAME starhop.com\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The domain name\u00a0(starhop.com) is totally different than the name of the center.<\/p>\n

They didn’t choose “McAuliffeShepardDiscoveryCenter.com.” It would’ve been way too long and difficult to spell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Take a close look at this peculiar name of a museum:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Strawbery Banke Museum<\/strong><\/a> is\u00a0an outdoor history museum dedicated to bringing American history to life. Wait a minute! Did you look closely at the name and catch the one (r) in Strawbery and the (e) on the end of bank? The name of the museum and the domain name are the same. Both are hard to spell. Go Figure!<\/p>\n

DOMAIN NAME: strawberybanke.org<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In this case, it’s a great idea to also buy the domain name: strawberrybank.org so visitors who misspell the domain name can end up on the website anyway.\u00a0By buying common misspellings of the domain name, you are also defending your domain name against \u201ctyposquatting.\u201d<\/strong> A \u201ctyposquatter\u201d is someone that registers very similar domain names to yours in an attempt to steal your traffic.<\/p>\n

(3) Is it Easy to Pronounce?<\/h3>\n

It helps if the sound of your domain name rolls off the tip of your tongue. It will be so much easier for you to share your site with others. Most people will give up searching for your website quickly if they can\u2019t figure out how to spell what you said to them over the phone.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s one that is hard to spell and say out loud:<\/strong><\/p>\n

DOMAIN NAME: islesofshoals.com<\/strong><\/span> (The Isles of Shoals Steamship Company<\/strong><\/a>) Luckily, the Isles of Shoals is a popular attraction in New Hampshire so visitors can often find this website in spite of its tricky name.<\/p>\n

\"NH<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Of course, there are many other peculiar and difficult-to-spell names in New Hampshire such as Lake Winnipesaukee<\/strong> and the Kancamagus Highway<\/strong>. If you owned a hotel with the name “Kancamagus Highway Hotel,” picking KancamagusHighwayHotel.com as a domain name would be a risky choice. It would be difficult to spell, difficult to pronounce and too long.<\/p>\n

(4) Does it include Numbers or Hyphens?<\/h3>\n

If you have a “number” in your domain name, visitors to your website may not know whether to spell the number or to use a numeral if they hear your domain name mentioned.\u00a0Likewise, if you have a hyphen in your domain name, it\u2019s easy to forget when, where, and if to use it.<\/p>\n

NOTE: If you\u2019re going to use two words or more together in your domain name, make sure that they don\u2019t accidentally create other unintended words, especially inappropriate ones.<\/div>\n

Take a look at the domain name choices on your list. Can you cross off a few? Good. We’re on the home stretch now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBrandable\u201d versus Generic Domain Names<\/h3>\n

\u201cBrandable\u201d domain names sound like a company when you say them out loud such as google.com<\/strong>\u00a0or bing.com<\/strong>. Generic domain names are made up from common words and phrases. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Your domain name is how your visitors will discover, remember, and share your brand around the web, so don\u2019t settle for awkward strings of multiple SEO keywords.<\/p>\n

\"brandable<\/p>\n

What are SEO keywords?<\/span> They are the words and phrases in your web content that help people find your site through search engines. Keywords also help search engines, such as Google and Bing, see what your company is all about.<\/p>\n

In my domain name crimsondesigns.com<\/a><\/strong>, I have included the word \u201cdesigns.<\/strong>\u201d It is a keyword. I also have the word \u201ccrimson<\/strong>\u201d which does nothing for my web design site as a keyword. But it helps distinguish it from others.<\/p>\n

Having some keywords in your domain name can help drive traffic to your website, but you should use them sensibly and not go overboard. Stringing too many of them awkwardly together may make your site seem less professional. So be careful. They may also limit the expansion of your brand in the future.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, a unique, memorable domain name with ONE effective keyword can make it easier for new customers to remember your brand. They’ll also have a good hunch about what you do right away.<\/p>\n

Example: You could use word such as\u00a0fresh,<\/strong>\u00a0bakery<\/strong> or cupcake<\/strong> in your bakery’s domain name.<\/p>\n
