The Untimely Demise of a Web Host?
Visions of Tire Tracks on my Face
I see myself lying in the road. Mail is strewn about and tire tracks have dented my face. These visions started last week after a phone conversation with a new web design client from Sandwich, NH. It was all quite normal at first. We discussed web page layout, images, and colors. Then he asked about a domain name and host.
Web Site Hosting Gone Awry
I suggested keeping his domain name at a separate place from the host where he kept his website. I also suggested he buy his domain name on his own so he would have full control of it. Then I offered to manage hosting.
“What if you move?” he asked.
“Everything will be fine,” I answered. “Nothing changes.”
But then he asked, “Okay, what if you get hit by a bus?”
What if I get hit by a bus? I was amused and startled by this blunt question.
“No one has ever asked me that before,” I said, a bit flustered. (I was having my first tire track vision at that moment.)
Then I remembered that his domain name would be kept at a separate place, so he could easily switch hosts if I were to suffer an untimely demise. He was happy to hear that this problem was easily solved—at least for him.
Since this discussion, I have been paying closer attention to the school buses that pass by my web design studio. Their engines sound more intimidating now and yet a bit funnier too.
